Pier Street apartments

Pier Street stretches to the shoreline and extends as Altona Pier into the bay. The architecture of Pier Street Apartments draws on the sensory experiences of this coastal setting. Comprising 52 apartments, the project reinterprets the glistening sunlight on water as dappled light filtering through perforated screens. This sheer outer envelope contains a sequence of terraces - private outdoor rooms that mediate between the domestic interiors, the urban context, and the expansive coastal landscape. The greenery of the foreshore reserves finds its counterpart in a landscaped courtyard at the heart of the project. Raised above the ground, this secluded communal garden opens the building to sea views while allowing sunlight to reach all residences. The two building volumes are linked by bridges that overlook the shared landscape, reinforcing a sense of connection and community within a setting inspired by the coast.
